I’ll Dance at Your Wedding

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

“It’s really fun,” says Norris, who has seen a parallel between how a couple learn to dance together and how they will learn to go through married life together.

“A couple is never progressing at the same speed when learning a dance,” she says. “It teaches them that they have to cut each other some slack and relax and enjoy.”

One of the couples with whom she is workingis dancing to a song that will include a medley, including the fox trot and swing. Another couple is doing the cha cha.

And then there are the couples who like to go big: One couple who have been taking lessons at Gotta Dance plan to get everyone on the floor. Their first dance will start out as a ballad and then switch to the Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” complete with hip hopmoves, Simon says.

The bridal party will take part in the dance, and the couple have invited those attending the ceremony to come to dance classes ahead of time to learn some of the moves.

Dave Hulinsky, owner of Complete Music in Rapid City, says he’s witnessed unique first dances such as thoseSimon describes. wholesale jerseys http://www.big49erssanfrancisco.com The couple might want others on the floor with them to divert attention from them.

Not putting pressure on yourself and realizing it doesn’t have to be perfect is the best way to approach it, says Marta Block, editorial director and wedding expert for the wedding and entertainment booking service GigMasters.

“Couples should play to their strengths,” Block says. “Dance classes are definitely helpful to calm nerves and give confidence, but no one should expect to go from non dancer to ‘Dancing with the Stars’ material in three lessons.

“There’s nothing wrong with a basic, traditional, slow song,” she says.

Norris agrees, sayingthat dance lessons shouldn’t add to the anxiety about the day. Instead, they should give couples a much needed break.

“Getting ready for a wedding can be stressful,” she says. “If you can convince them it doesn’t have to be perfect, and that everybody’s going to think it’s beautiful, for that hour, they can get away and have fun.”

A kid always on the go

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

THURMONT When Melissa and Michelle White were growing up in Ladiesburg, their parents had to push the girls out the door to play. Their parents didn’t face that challenge with the girls’ younger brother, Michael.

“You couldn’t keep the boy inside,” Michelle said.

Michael, 14, and his friend, Thomas Plunkard, 16, died last week when severe thunderstorms flooded Little Pipe Creek along the border of Carroll and Frederick counties. Cheap Jerseys china http://www.cheapnfljerseysonlinef.top Their funeral services took place Monday.

Michael’s maternal grandmother, Pat Ott, remembered a little boy who loved to twirl maple seed pods like helicopters or pin them on his nose to make people laugh.

Mikey, as he was called by his family and friends, loved to entertain and tease. He was constantly playing pranks or trying to play fight, his sisters said.

“He’d mess with you, then run, ’cause he knew you couldn’t catch him,” Melissa said.

Despite his relentless teasing, it was hard to get mad at him.

“His smile would make you melt,” Michelle said. “You just wanted to squeeze him.”

As the youngest child and the only boy in the family, Mikey got lots of attention, according to his sisters.

“Every time we went somewhere, he got a toy,” Michelle said. “We could go to the bank, and he’d get a toy.”

The toys he usually came home with were green army men. The floors of their house were always covered with thousands of the little military men when he was a boy, Michelle said.

“We probably could’ve melted them down and made a house,” she said.

Michael would leave the men lying everywhere, and their dad would often end up stepping on them barefoot, she laughed.

After school, Mikey and his sisters would walk to their paternal grandmother’s house. While they waited for their parents to finish working, the children would play soccer, and their grandmother often acted as goalkeeper.

Mikey thrived on soccer. Even before he was old enough to play, he would go to games or practices with his sisters.

“He would run after us and get the balls for us,” Melissa said.

Last year, Michael earned a spot on the FC Frederick 1990 1991 Premiere Soccer, a travel team in the National Capital Soccer League.

“He was so proud when he made it,” said his father, Tom.

After a handful of games, Mikey was selected as one of the team’s starting midfield players, Mr. White said.

Mikey hoped to play in college and possibly pursue a professional soccer career.

“I think he wanted to go as far as he could go,” Mr. White said.

The father loved watching his son play and drove Mikey to games up and down the East Coast.

“He wasn’t no ball hog,” Mr. White said. “He didn’t care who got the glory.”

After Mikey’s death, his teammates honored him by having his jersey number 17 stitched on their black jerseys, over their hearts.

“Michael will essentially be playing with them on the field, even though he won’t be there,” said Carol Shortt, the wife of one of the coaches.

The team is working to establish a soccer scholarship fund in Mikey’s name that will benefit two economically disadvantaged youths, she said.

Mikey also played on the junior varsity soccer team for Walkersville High School. He spent many hours during the past summer running and practicing his skills. His goal was to make the varsity team this year, Melissa said.
